How do you make stewed pears?
How do you make stewed pears, and what do you need? For this stewed pear recipe, you need stewed pears (we will tell you which kind of pears you want to use in the following part), cinnamon or a cinnamon stick, red wine (or redcurrant juice), and water.
You can optionally add brown caster sugar and cloves to taste. For a fresher stewed pears taste, add lemon juice or lemon zest.
Instead of wine or berry juice, you can also add water and a splash of grenadine.
Peel the stewed pears and leave the stalk on. You can also halve the pears and remove the core if you prefer. We like them more to serve with a stem!
Fun fact: in the Middle Ages, they also cooked the peel; you can also try this!
Also delicious to make: vegan pumpkin soup, cauliflower wings, vegan poke bowl, and banana pancakes with oatmeal!
Stewed pear varieties
Which pears do you need for this stewed pear recipe? Choose the Saint Rémy or Gieser Wildeman pear. The pears have a slightly different taste, but both are perfect for making stewed pears.
The Gieser Wildeman pear is slightly sweeter than the Saint Rémy. This means you don’t have to add any sugar to the stewed pears.
The Saint Rémy pear has a fresher taste, it is just what you like better in terms of taste. We prefer the Gieser Wildeman pears.
The color of the two types of pears is also different. Gieser Wildeman pears get a beautiful deep red color during stewing, while the Saint Rémy pears turn a slightly lighter pink.
You can obtain these pear varieties from October to February. That is, in the Netherlands, the stewed pear season! So depending on were you are located, check when it’s pear season.
You could also use the Sweet Brederode, the Winter Reed Pear and the Clay Pear to make stewed pears. These are only less easily available (in the Netherlands).
Stewed pears without wine
Before you start stewing the pears, you can choose whether you want to do this with or without alcohol. If you want to make stewed pears without alcohol, use red currant juice.
You can also just add water and a splash of grenadine to the stewed pears!
Stewed pears without wine do not need to be stewed for as long (they are certainly done after 1 hour!).
We like both stewed pears with wine and stewed pears with currant juice!
If you want to make this stewed pear recipe with red wine, use 200 milliliters of red wine on 1 kg of stewed pears.
Did you know that you can also make stewed pears with white wine?
Preparing stewed pears
Put the pears in a pan and add cinnamon, red wine / currant juice, sugar and cloves if desired. Then add water (or more wine / berry juice) until the pears are almost submerged. Bring to boil and then turn the heat low.
How long should stewed pears cook? Let the pears stew for at least 1 hour. The pears are generally cooked after 1 hour, but the longer you stew, the redder (and tastier) the pears will become.
In our experience, the taste is the best after 3 hours of stewing. Then they are nice and juicy and soft!
If you want, you can reduce the cooking water. You can also bind the moisture with cornstarch for a delicious sauce!
Make sure to try these recipes as well: German mulled wine, vegan apple turnovers, and puff pastry cinnamon rolls.
Store stewed pears
Do you want to store the stewed pears? Let them cool down first. Then put them tightly closed in the refrigerator. Then you can keep them for another 2-3 days.
Do you want to eat a stewed pear from the fridge? Always take one with a clean spoon, otherwise you can keep them less long.
Freezing stewed pears is also possible. These will keep for 3 months in the freezer. Put them in a closed container. You can freeze the cooking liquid with it.
Stewed pears are delicious to eat hot and cold! That does not matter for the taste.
Do you want to reheat the stewed pears? Let them defrost first and then put them in a pan with cooking liquid. Or warm them up in the microwave.

Ingredients
- 8 pears (about 1 kilo, Saint Rémy or Gieser Wildeman pears)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick
- 200 milliliters red wine (or redcurrant juice)
- 1-2 tablespoons brown caster sugar (optional, to taste)
- 4 cloves (optional)
- water (or more red wine/berry juice)
Instructions
- Peel the pears. We like stewing pears best with the stalk, but you can of course halve the pears and remove the core if you prefer. Fun fact: in the Middle Ages they also cooked the peel, you can try that too!
- Place the pears in a pan and add cinnamon, red wine/berry juice, and, if desired, sugar and cloves.
- Then add water (or more wine/berry juice) until the pears are almost submerged.
- Bring to boil and then reduce the heat.
- Let the pears stew for at least 1 hour.
- After 1 hour the pears are basically done, but the longer you stew, the redder (and more flavorful) the pears will become. In our experience, the taste is the best after 3 hours of stewing. Note: in berry juice the pears are often done faster.
Notes
Instead of wine or berry juice, you can also add water and a dash of grenadine.
You can also leave out the sugar; the stewed pears will naturally become sweeter by stewing. Gieser Wildeman stewed pears are certainly sweet enough!
For fresher stewed pears, add some lemon juice or lemon zest.
