Aperol Spritz Cocktail
What exactly is an Aperol Spritz cocktail? What is a spritz? And where does the orange drink come from? As we said before, the drink originated in Italy. The drink has been around there for at least fifty years.
In 1919, the Barbieri brothers created the drink Aperol in the Italian city of Padua, just west of Venice. The Italian makers derived the word Aperol from the word apero, which is a French word for an aperitif.
A spritz is an aperitif, a drink taken before a meal. A liqueur, often Aperol, Select, or Campari, is mixed with prosecco, water, and ice to make a spritz cocktail.
Then, in the 1950s, the recipe for the Aperol Spritz was created. The drink Aperol has become super popular thanks to the Aperol Spritz recipe and the world-famous combination of Aperol with Prosecco and sparkling water. Because Aperol is a light spirit (strong drink), it is perfect in combination with Prosecco.
Especially in Italy, the drink has become an indispensable part of life.

Aperol Spritz Recipe 3-2-1
Now that we know more about the Aperol Spritz’s origins, it’s time to make one yourself!
What do you need for this Aperol Spritz recipe? Get the following ingredients. Prosecco (3 ounces or 3 parts), sparkling water (1 ounce or 1 part), Aperol (2 ounces or 2 parts), ice cubes and an orange slice. This is the perfect Aperol Spritz ratio, but you can vary the amounts, to taste.
Just make sure it’s always 3 parts Prosecco, 1 part sparkling water, and 2 parts Aperol. This is the golden Aperol Spritz ratio. Also make sure to pour in this order for the best flavors!
We always use our Soda Stream to make sparkling water, very handy and environmentally friendly!
Serve the Aperol Spritz in an Aperol Spritz glass or a gin and tonic glass. If you don’t have those cocktail glasses, use another large glass! For example, a large wine glass.
Best Prosecco for Aperol Spritz
Choose a dry Prosecco! And one that isn’t super sweet. Like we said before, Italian apéritifs are consumed before a meal, and those are traditionally more bitter than sweet. And if you get a sweet Prosecco, the Aperol Spritz cocktail might end up too sweet.
It is about the fresh base notes of prosecco that balances well with the Aperol.
You don’t have to get the most expensive bottle of Prosecco, a Prosecco from the supermarket can be great for this Aperol Spritz 3-2-1 recipe as well. Or go to your local liquor store, and ask for a delicious dry Prosecco!
Do you not have prosecco at home but do have Cava? Then give the Italian cocktail a Spanish twist by replacing the prosecco with Cava. This gives the Aperol Spritz a surprising taste! Don’t let the Italians know, though, because I don’t think they will approve.

How Do You Make Aperol Spritz?
Within 5 minutes, you can make your own Aperol Spritz cocktail! But how do you make Aperol Spritz?
Grab a gin and tonic glass or a large wine glass. If you want your drink to be extra icy, you can cool it in the freezer first.
First pour 3 ounces or 3 parts Prosecco into the glass and then 1 ounce or 1 part sparkling water. Finally, pour the Aperol (2 ounces or 2 parts) into the glass.
This is the perfect Aperol Spritz ratio, but you can vary the amounts, to taste. Just keep the parts in mind!
Then add some ice cubes to the summer cocktail. About 3 ice cubes is enough, because when it is warm they melt quickly and the Aperol Spritz cocktail becomes very watery. So don’t add too much ice.
Stir the drink once. Serve with a slice of orange, or make it chic and serve with an orange peel curl!
Never pour the Aperol into your glass first, because the Aperol is heavier than water and prosecco. This will cause the Aperol to sit at the bottom of the glass and will result in a less tasty Aperol Spritzer flavor combination. And we don’t want that!
Aperol Spritz Mocktail
Do you want to make an Aperol Spritz mocktail, so a non alcoholic Aperol Spritz? Get an alcohol free Italian Spritz, for example, the Lyre’s Italian Spritz, and mix with tonic water.
Depending on where you are based, check what’s available. In the Netherlands, for example, we use Nona Spritz, Crodino, or Gingerino.
Fill a glass with ice cubes. Mix the non alcoholic Spritz 1:1 with tonic water and serve with an orange segment or slice. And cheers, enjoy your alcohol free Aperol Spritz.
Serving a Spritz cocktail
Serve the drink with a slice of orange in it. Combine the drink with a bowl of olives or some chips!
In Italy on the terrace, for example, we always got a bowl of salty natural chips with our Aperol Spritz, very tasty.
Enjoy this Aperol Spritz recipe 3-2-1 and delicious summer drink! Cheers! And let us know in the comments how the Aperol Spritz turned out for you.
