When I wanted to make a recipe with oat flour and saw expensive options in the supermarket, I thought: can’t I make oat flour myself? And what do you think?
Yes! It’s so ridiculously easy that I wonder why oat flour is sold in the supermarket because if you make it yourself it can be 3x cheaper. You only need two things!
Oatmeal Flour
Quite literally said, oat flour is actually oatmeal flour. Many products are made from oats (we’ll explain later), but for oat flour, you need oatmeal/rolled oats.
Oats, Oat grain, Oat bran, Steel-cut Oats, Oatmeal, Rolled Oats, Oat Flour?
There are SO MANY oat options that you might get confused. It all starts with the grain oat. This grain grows a bit like wheat. Oat seeds are harvested from the plant.
The oat seed consists of a peel (not digestible, and thrown away), oat bran (second ‘protective layer’), and an inner grain (which we know as oat groats). Oat bran is all hip these days because it’s a superfood. The oat groats are broken and known as steel-cut oats.
Oat flakes and rolled oats are made from the oat groats. They heat the groats, which they then steam and roll. The only difference between oat flakes and rolled oats is its size. Rolled oats (also known as old fashioned oats) are cut again in the process and oat flakes are the whole grains, but flat.
Oatmeal can mean multiple things: a meal made from oats, rolled oats, or the porridge made from ground or rolled oats. I personally use the word oatmeal for rolled oats in my articles.
Gluten-Free Oatmeal
Oats naturally don’t contain gluten. Unfortunately, oats are often ground in the same place as wheat, so rolled oats are not 100% gluten free. Do you have a gluten allergy? Buy rolled oats/oatmeal with the gluten-free label on the packaging!
Are Oats Healthy?
Oats are also grain, just like wheat, but oats contain a lot of healthy ingredients and are, therefore, healthier than wheat. Oats are full of good fiber and antioxidants. So yes, you can say that oatmeal is healthy! The only ‘disadvantage’ is that oats – like wheat – contain a lot of carbohydrates.
