Healthy oatmeal banana bread, no sugar, and vegan? That can’t be tasty, can it? We are happy to prove otherwise! This is a really healthy breakfast.
We use oatmeal (rolled oats) in this banana bread instead of flour and dates instead of sugar. You don’t taste the date taste at all in the end result, but the cake is nice and sweet.

Vegan Oat Banana Bread
In our best banana bread recipe ever, butter and egg are used. But in this vegan banana bread recipe, we use coconut oil!
The bananas and dates make for a good ‘slice’ and with some baking powder, we make it a compact whole.
Do you like nice creamy banana bread? Add some extra water to the batter!
Oatmeal Banana Bread
I mentioned it before, but we use oatmeal flour instead of flour in this banana bread!
Oats are also grain, just like wheat, but oatmeal contains a lot of healthy ingredients and is, therefore, healthier than wheat. Oatmeal is full of good fiber and antioxidants.
Do you know how to make oat flour yourself? It is very easy!
Gluten-Free Banana Bread
Oats naturally don’t contain gluten. Unfortunately, oats are often ground in the same place as wheat, so it is not 100% gluten free. Do you have a gluten allergy? Then buy oatmeal (rolled oats) with the gluten-free label on the packaging!

Banana Bread No Sugar
Of course, bananas are already sweet. Especially if you use overripe bananas, sometimes you don’t even need extra sweetener! In this recipe, we use Medjool dates to make the vegan banana bread a little sweeter.
I don’t really like date taste myself, but by grinding the dates well with the bananas in a food processor (or hand blender), you don’t taste anything of the dates, but you do taste the sweetness! Do you like date taste? Then cut the dates into pieces!

Making Healthy Banana Bread
It’s actually very easy: you mix the wet ingredients together (we threw it in the food processor for convenience) and then use a spatula to mix the dry ingredients through the mixture.
We chose to decorate our banana bread with a banana, sliced, on top. You can also halve a banana in length and place it on top of it. The banana bakes deliciously and becomes nice and soft; really recommended!
Healthy Oatmeal Banana Bread (No Sugar)
Is this vegan banana bread gluten-free? YES! And also sugar-free, this banana bread with oatmeal is truly healthy!
Ingredients
- 3 ripe bananas (+1 for decorating)
- 2 cups rolled oats (180 gram)
- 3 Medjool dates (60 gram without seed)
- 2 teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ cup (coconut) oil (60 gram)
- 3 tbsp + 1 tsp water (50 milliliters)
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- pinch of salt
Optional
- 1 hand chopped dark chocolate / nuts / coconut grater
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 340 °F / 170 °C and grease the baking tin. Tip: use a silicone mold, so you don't have to grease.
- Do you have rolled oats instead of oat flour? Grind the rolled oats in a food processor or (hand) blender until you have oat flour! Put the oat flour in a bowl.
- Grind the dates and bananas in your blender or food processor.
- Add the coconut oil, salt, water and optionally the spices (cinnamon or biscuit and gingerbread spices). Mix until smooth.
- Grind (or spatula) the oat flour + baking powder through the mixture until you have a nice batter. If you like creamy banana bread, add a little more water. The thickness of your batter also depends on the size of your bananas.
- Pour your batter into the cake tin and decorate with the extra banana. You can slice it, but you can also cut the banana in half lengthwise and on top.
- Bake the banana bread in 50-60 minutes. From 50 minutes, check with a skewer whether it is cooked. Let the banana bread cool for another 10 minutes after you have taken it out. Then the banana bread is better released, and it is easier to cut slices. Enjoy your meal!
Notes
You can also add raisins, nuts and / or fruit to the batter!

Yen C.
Hello, is there anyvway we can omit the oil in this recipe? We cannot use oil in our diet and I am wondering what is the best substitute for oil in this recipe?
Maartje
Hi Yen, I have no experience with this, so I do not feel like I am the right person to give you any tips on this topic.
Misty
I use applesauce as a one-to-one substitution
Maartje
Love that! Thanks for sharing
Rachel
I’m going to be baking in a glass dish, would you still recommend the same baking time?
Maartje
Hi Rachel! That’s a good question, I have no experience with this, but I suspect glass would get as hot as any other cake tin, so I would probably use the same baking time, yes!
