You can always make us happy with a cheese fondue evening! Cozy with the two of us, when we have guests or when we go out to eat, it is always a party when we eat cheese fondue. And what we love about cheese fondue is that it is always slightly different with different cheese fondue dippers!
What do you dip in cheese fondue? If you often cheese fondue then you exactly know what you like and you probably often put the same things on the table. But variety, experimenting with new cheese fondue dippers, is great fun.
We had never eaten potato as a cheese fondue dip, but when we ate it we liked it so much. And we were able to surprise someone with pineapple (one of our favorite cheese fondue dippers).
Surprise yourself and your guests with these cheese fondue ideas!
Things to Dip in Cheese Fondue
- Bread
Bread is actually the standard cheese fondue dip that we always have on the table during cheese fondue.
We definitely recommend varying with bread! Consider, for example, white or brown bread, baguette, or focaccia flat bread.
It is also delicious to put some herb butter on the table.
- Potato
Until recently, we hadn’t thought about potato as a cheese fondue dip. But we ate it once and are now sold! Potato with cheese is really delicious.
And like bread, it is great to vary with potatoes. We often cook potatoes and then cut them into cubes. We then prick the potato cubes in the cheese!
But you can also go for potato croquettes, small fried potatoes or potatoes wedges with herbs (for example rosemary).
Make sure to prepare the potato before putting it on the table.
- Cheese Fondue Vegetables
Besides bread and potato, vegetables cannot be missed as cheese fondue dippers! Cheese fondue with vegetables is tasty and a bit healthier.
What are tasty cheese fondue vegetables to put on the table? See a list below and choose what you like. And occasionally alternate with vegetables!
- Broccoli florets
- Cherry tomato
- Radishes
- Cucumber
- Bell pepper (in different colors)
- Cauliflower florets
- Celery
- Mini pickles
- Chicory leaves
- Carrot
- Fennel
- Raw tiny onions
- Green or white asparagus
- Zucchini
- Eggplant
Fry or boil some vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, so the vegetables are al dente and can be dipped right into the cheese!
Pre-cook the asparagus and grill or fry the zucchini and eggplant in advance.
Cut the vegetables into cubes or strips, so that they can easily be dipped into the cheese.
- Mushrooms
Okay, mushrooms belong to the previous paragraph with cheese fondue vegetables, of course. But mushrooms are among my absolute favorite cheese fondue dippers.
In my opinion, mushrooms cannot be missed during cheese fondue.
We usually buy a small box of mushrooms. It is great to put them on the table both raw and fried (or choose what you like yourself), for variation.
Fry the mushrooms briefly if you don’t want to serve them raw. Our tip: fry them with some garlic!
- Nachos Chips
Nachos chips are a super delicious cheese fondue dip. Cheese and nachos are just a perfect combination!
- Fruit
What to eat with cheese fondue? Besides vegetables, bread, potato, fruit is also a good idea.
There are different types of fruit that you can serve with cheese fondue. We find the combination of cheese and pineapple really delicious. Definitely give that a try (also if you don’t like pineapple on pizza)!
We prefer fresh fruit varieties during cheese fondue, but we have also heard from some people that they absolutely love banana as a cheese fondue dish.
See a list of fruit below and choose what you like. And occasionally alternate with fruit! I personally didn’t like strawberries, so I left them out.
• Pineapple
• Apple
• Grapes
• Banana
• Pear
• Figs
- (Vegetarian) Meatballs
(Vegetarian) meatballs with cheese fondue is a delicious idea. We are vegetarians ourselves, so always opt for the vegetarian version. But if you eat meat or eat cheese fondue with meat eaters, you can opt for meat meatballs.
We personally do not mind if a meatball is dipped in the cheese. We understand very well that other vegetarians don’t want this, so keep that in mind if you cheese fondue with vegetarians.
You can make your own meatballs or buy them ready-made.
Other meat side dishes to put on the table during cheese fondue are, for example, chicken skewers, and dry sausages. Do you want to eat fish during cheese fondue? We’ve heard good stories about fried shrimp as a side dish.
- Bugles Chips
What to serve with cheese fondue?! Bugle chips really is one of my favorite cheese fondue dippers. Not sure if you can buy Lays Bugles chips all around the world, but in the Netherlands they are very popular.
And no, it is definitely not the healthiest cheese fondue dipper. If you want a healthier cheese fondue, Bugles chips are not a good idea. But men, these chips are so good with cheese fondue.
The chips are shaped in a little ‘fries bag’, so they are perfect for dipping into the cheese. The ‘bag’ is perfectly filled with cheese.
- Stuffed pasta
Not the most common cheese fondue sides, but no less delicious: stuffed pasta. The cheese itself is of course very filling already and often a bit heavy on the stomach. And a filled pasta certainly does not help with that. But try it out!
Get a stuffed pasta such as ravioli or tortellini. Unfilled pasta is of course also possible, such as penne or fusilli. You can easily dip these pasta types in the cheese or stick them on your stick.
Also great to try: gnocchi!
- Breadsticks
Great fun if you do cheese fondue with children: breadsticks! Perfect for dipping in the cheese.
Hopefully you now are some cheese fondue dippers richer. Enjoy these cheese fondue ideas!
