How to Make Fruit Popsicles
Making fruit popsicles is so easy: you choose your favorite fruit, mash it (possibly with some apple juice, orange juice, or lemonade) and you freeze them. After a few hours you can enjoy your homemade fruit pops!
The advantage of making fruit popsicles is that you get to decide the taste. Whether you like sweet or maybe sour, you decide you put in and how much. Fruit popsicles are also vegan and lactose free, and is therefore suitable for (almost) everyone!
NOTE: fruit contains natural sugars, so use less sweet fruits if you try to eat less sugar. Of course, fruit also contains a lot of fiber and vitamins so it’s not bad for you.
How to Make Rainbow Popsicles
To make rainbow popsicles, we’re going to make 5 different layers: red, orange, yellow, green and purple. You can also make a blue layer by mixing red cabbage juice or blueberries with baking soda, but we kept this recipe easy.
We use watermelon, orange, pineapple, kiwi, and blueberries. You only need 75 grams / ⅓ cup of everything, so we recommend buying watermelon- and pineapple pieces (not an entire watermelon or pineapple) so you don’t have too many leftovers. All the ingredients you can also use in a smoothie (or rainbow smoothie!).
You can also use other fruits or vegetables for the colors. Or add some banana, yogurt, milk, or ice cream to each layer for a richer taste (note: kiwi becomes bitter in combination with dairy products!).
Other options for fruit include:
- RED: strawberries, raspberries, red berries, cherries
- ORANGE: peach, papaya, carrot
- YELLOW: mango, banana, apple
- GREEN: spinach, cucumber, grapes
- BLUE: blueberries with a little baking soda, red cabbage juice with a little baking soda
- PURPLE: red fruit, blueberries, blackberries
Popsicle Molds
We have a popsicle mold that is made out of one piece. This is useful for knocking out bubbles and keeping the popsicles stable. But taking the ice cream out is more difficult. You then have to rinse the mold with hot water, so that the popsicles come out.
A popsicle mold with loose parts is easier to get the popsicles out, but is a little more difficult with the other things. It’s really just figuring out what works best for you.

Rainbow popsicles with fruit
Fun and healthy fruit popsicles in the colors of the rainbow!
Ingredients
- ⅓ cup watermelon (75 gram)
- ½ orange (or 2 tangerines)
- ⅓ cup pineapple (75 gram)
- 1 kiwi
- ⅓ cup blueberries (75 gram)
Instructions
- Purée all colors of fruit, starting with red, then orange, yellow, green and purple. Do you want to make a blue layer? Then double the blueberries and add a pinch of baking soda to one portion - this will make the color bluer.
- Fill each ice pop maker with 1 or 2 tablespoons of red fruit puree. Then 'stamp' your ice cream mold (gently) on the counter once, so there won't be any bubbles. Watch the size of your ice pop maker; you should be able to create 5 layers. And since the mold becomes wider, you fill less red, and more purple in comparison.
- Optional: put your mold in the freezer for half an hour after each layer. This way you get nice clean lines. Doesn't it have to be so neat? Spoon all the colors in the molds immediately and insert your stick.
- The ice lollies must be in the freezer for at least 4 hours. We usually make them a day before use, so they can freeze overnight. But you can make them in the morning, and eat them later in the afternoon!
Notes
You can also use other fruits or vegetables, or combinations:
- RED: strawberries, raspberries, red currants, cherries
- ORANGE: peach, papaya, carrot
- YELLOW: mango, banana, apple
- GREEN: spinach, cucumber, grapes
- BLUE: blueberries with a little baking soda, red cabbage juice with a little baking soda
- PURPLE: red fruits, blueberries, blackberries
